The only way you can make serious money from the Adsense program is to get traffic and more traffic and still more traffic and … (you get the picture, don’t you?) – and I shall briefly tell you how to have that below. Don’t let people fool you into believing that if you put a web site with content (esp. that “high paying keyword” content), you will make millions overnight. The one and the only thing a web site needs for any kind of success (Adsense or direct advertising) is TRAFFIC.
    How to get traffic:
    =============
    1. Follow basic SEO techniques on your web site – no hacks (stay away from hacks) – just start thinking like a search engine bot and you shall go places.
    2. Get lots of inbound links – visit forums and blogs of your industry and leave “sensible”, “valuable” and “meaningful” comments/answers. This will help a lot (and I mean A LOT – from personal experience)
    3. THE MOST IMPORTANT – Add one page of (again) “sensible”, “valuable” and “meaningful” content to your web site each day. If you can add 2, better, 3, still better (but I don’t think one can add more than 5 pages of really good content per day). Good content will act as “link bait” – thus, other web site owners will link to your web site if they find it useful.
    4. Get proper hosting (if you don’t have it yet)
    So best of luck

Some sites do very well with Adsense (even in the millions of dollars a year) while many more sites do extremely poorly with the program (can’t even earn $10 a month).
One of the misconception people have about Adsense is they simply slap it in their websites and it will automatically earn them big money — which is not true as evidenced by the many disgruntled webmasters
    Your income will depend on:
    - the topic of your site (if you have high paying keywords you stand to earn more)
    - responsiveness of users to ad (are visitors coming to your site with blinders in their eye or do they look at the ads as additional complementary resource)
    - traffic (you earn more with more traffic, even if you have low paying keywords or other metrics)
    - how you implement the ads on your site (some positions and colors work better than others). Check Google’s heat map as they have tested where the best placements are https://www.google.com/support/adsense/b…
I suggest you read the article “Contextual Advertising: Why Are You Earning Only Pennies?” which talks specifically about sites like yours that earn only pennies from Adsense http://www.powerhomebiz.com/022006/adsen…

Without knowing your site, it’s hard for anyone to accurately answer that question. Some typical items people have encountered.
    1. Not enough web traffic. Click through rates tend to be lower on websites than they are for search engine results pages. In other words, if I were searching Google for “3G phones”, the AdWords that show are more likely to be clicked by users than if those same ads showed on your website.
    2. The content on the web page wasn’t specific enough to get relevant ads. The more focused the article, the better any context sensitive system will have in serving ads. It could be Google is having a harder time trying to figure out what you’re about.
    3. Ad placement and number of ads. Some people put too many ad units on a page which can annoy readers.
    4. It could be the advertisers. They may not have compelling enough ad for people to pursue.
You might try reading the AdSense blog. They have some good tips and tutorials that can provide better insight.
