Newbie To Blogging And Adsense, So Many Questions! Help!?
Posted by Adsense Blog on June 20th, 2009 at 08:37am
I’m thinking of starting a blog/information site for people interested in home remodeling, especially with a ‘green’ perspective. I want to use Google AdSense on it for some revenue. I’m new to making websites, etc. and would love some opinions about the following…
Will I have a better chance at increased AdSense revenue if I make my own site, with its own URL, or go with a website that hosts blogs?
example:
www.mysite.com versus mysite.blogspot.com
Would I be better off making a single blog where I cover a fairly wide range of remodeling topics, or would it be better to make several different blogs, each with its own name, and keep my topics more specific in each one?
Advantages of 1 site is that I’d have all my traffic going to one page, i.e. more hits on one page.
Advantage of multiple sites is that I could link them together and perhaps attract traffic from a wider range of search results.
Do I need to have my blogs up and running before applying to Google for AdSense?
I read about “keywords”. What are these, exactly, and how do I use them to increase my search ranking, or AdSense revenue?
Any other suggestions you may have are very welcome. I’m a beginner and looking to learn a lot fast.

I’ve been with Adsense since it became public in June 2003.
Blogs do not work really well with Adsense. Even the big bloggers are finding that they are better off using banner ads on a cost per impression basis to monetize the huge traffic their blogs get.
The problem with blogs and Adsense is the responsiveness of audience to the ads. People visit blogs to read about something — they are not on the lookout for ways to spend money.
Consider this: A travel website that provides information on travel to Spain will attract visitors looking for ways to arrange their travel and spend money on their vacation to Spain. Your site provides the info, but the ads will provide hotels, travel agencies, tourist destinations, car rentals — ads that are likely to get the attention of the users of your site. This is a site that will most likely do well with Adsense. However, if you are a gaming website where the main purpose of the user is to play games on your site, then Adsense will not perform as well.
To improve the performance of Adsense on your site, Google Adsense Help has good tips on where to put the ads on a blog (their blog heat map). Their tips are as follows: https://www.google.com/adsense/support/b...
1. Blend the ads on your blog
2. Experiment with multiple ad formats and locations
3. Offer readers more options with search and referrals
4. Improve site targeting
One other tip — choose a blog topic that attracts people looking for ways to spend money (example is a blog that reviews various cameras and photographic equipment); or blogs that attract audiences that advertisers find very desirable such as high income people or tech savvy folks.
As to your questions:
1. YES it is better to have your own domain name; it’s easier to market and more memorable to visitors
2. It really depends. The benefit of having multi-topics is that you are more immune to fluctuations in specific keywords: e.g. when big advertisers pull out of keyword1, you still have keywords2 and 3 to help you. My main site that does extremely well with Adsense is multi-topic
3. Yes, your site or blog needs to be up and running. Afterall, the first info they will want is your URL as they will check your site. If it is not running, what will they check?
And if they don’t like your content, Adsense will sometimes make it difficult for your site to be accepted — requiring you to have your site up and running for 6 months, etc. There was a thread this week about a blogger whose application was rejected and one of the reasons given is that they want the blog to be up for 6 months. But I know some newly launched blogs get accepted, I think Adsense gives that reason when they find something they dont like
3. Re keywords – choose topics where users are likely to be ready to make a purchase (e.g. review sites of cameras) and that there’s lots of advertisers bidding as more bidding means higher revenues

It would be better to use a host that hosts blog, BUT use your own domain.
ex. sign up for blogspot, and use your own domain.
ie. myblogz.com
It wouldn’t matter if it’s different topic, or if it’s all one blog. Some people feel better if it’s all in one blog. Less clicking around.
I don’t know anything about AdSense. I just thought of doing the same thing yesterday. I saw a video on cnet about AdSense.
Keyword are something that increase revenue, I believe. I hard tat on CNET
