Is Google Submission And Adsense A Waist Of Time?

First i submitted around 120,000 with adsense ads on them about 4 months ago, when about 50% of the pages were listed i got hacked. sinse then i have reconfigured my domains so that the Hackers links dont get any visitors from my site searches/indexing etc. Now i have about 3000 indexed and over a period of 5 months i have earned $40. over the last month sinse changing the config ive earned 46cents. It seems obvious to me that to get listed you have to pay for adwords and the better keywords ie SHOPPING have already been taken so online marketing seems a total and utter waist of time. Does anyone agree, have you had the same experience. I know theres books online called How To Get Google Adwords For FREE? this is probably google trying to sell a book.? Any comments.
